week 7 reflection of two videos

Compare these two videos and share your reflection on what they both have in common with teaching literacy to bilingual students. Ex: strategies, lessons, assessments

To me, the teachers in these two videos in the common show me the enthusiasm. The willingness to help their students encourage them to commit more in the education. From these clips, I classify some important elements they have in common below.

1. Respect. They all respect the students' family and background. In the first video, school district not only takes care of the students but also the family members. They provide the afterschool program for preschool students, adult education for parents and lots of activities for older siblings. They even have health center for itself and other three schools in the neighborhood. In the second video, the teacher allows the students to communicate in their language, she deeply involves to students' community and understands students' prior knowledge.

2.Confidence. Spiritually, the teachers/ school all try to assist their students building confidence. In the first video, the teacher achieves this goal by teaching the dancing class. In the second one, maybe not so obvious, but in one scene, the teacher consults the students how to say the word in the native language, I believe students feel comfortable using their language and form their self-identity.

3. Variety of materials or teaching. The learning environment in C.P. Squire Elementary School is energetic, they apply the technology to assist the teaching and have giveaway books sponsored by the company for students. In the second school, teacher use graphic, activities to expand their knowledge from the community they are familiar to outside world.

4. Assessment. It's not so clear in the first video how the teacher employs the process. But through the description from the teacher mentioned the students' improvement and the employment of technology, I assume teacher could assess student traditionally and technologically. In the second video, the teacher shows one of her student's profile to provide aspects of assessments, like some testing paper to understand how they have learned the words and utilize different assessment rubrics to exam the students' reading and comprehension.
